Pixel 2 to get support for dark theme, confirms Google

Whether you are a tech geek or not, one of the visual enhancements that probably matters the most is the dark theme. It’s unarguably one of the coolest visual elements on supported smartphones, making for a clutter-free user interface. Most Android smartphone manufacturers with custom user interfaces have started including a dark theme right out-of-the-box. The trend also let Google include a half-baked version of the dark theme on the Pixel 2 last year. However, fans have been demanding an all-black theme for the Pixel 2’s stock Android interface and it seems that Google may have finally heard their request.

First noticed by Android Police, Google’s Issue Tracker page has confirmed a request to include a toggle for enabling the dark theme for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. “We have added support for a Dark theme to be applied to quick settings and launcher under Settings -> Display -> Device Theme,” read the post.

What this essentially means that the dark theme on the Pixel launcher will darken the quick settings, the folder icons and the app drawer once the user enables the dark theme toggle from the settings. Up until now, a Pixel 2 user would experience the dark theme only if an image with darker shades was set as the background wallpaper. With the toggle, users will now be able to experience the dark theme even if they are using a lighter background.

Are you eager to try out the feature? You might have to wait as the Google will roll out the feature as “an update in a future Android release.” Therefore, Pixel 2 users could expect Android P’s first stable release to feature the dark theme toggle.

However, the demand for an all-dark UI in stock Android is still at large. If you want to experience an almost-stock Android interface with an all-dark UI, then OnePlus’ Oxygen OS is presently your best bet. We hope that Google listens to Android’s fanbase and comes up with an all-dark interface soon in one of the updates for the upcoming Android release.
