These days, if you are planning to buy a TV, you have the option to decide whether to go for a smart TV or not. Google’s Android TV is one prominent platform in this space, competing with the likes of Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV Stick. However, one major feature that the former lacks is a voice assistant. In order to address the issue, Google rolls out the Google Assistant to Android TV platforms.

With Assistant on your Android TV, you will be able to jump right into your favourite shows, search for the latest blockbuster, check scores and even dim the lights while you sit for your blockbuster— all with your voice. Here are some of the functions explained in detail:

Play your favourite show: Yes, this means that you can simply tell your TV to play “Game of Thrones” or play your favourite tracks from Google Play.

Readout news: You will be able to order your TV to play news from specific genres such as entertainment, business, technology and more.

Order food: If you have Walmart or any other Google Express member departmental store in your vicinity, you can simply ask your TV to get your popcorn and beverages.

Apps for Assistant: Developers will be able to code apps specifically for the Assistant to let users get updates from their preferred service provides such as business news from WSJ.

Voice control: If you command your Android TV to turn up the volume, change channels, and control smart devices, it will do that without any issue.

The Google Assistant is now available as a system update on SHIELD TV and will be available on other supported Android TVs such as Sony’s Bravia as well as other partners.
