Qualcomm unveils a better Quick Charge 4+

The idea of fast charging on smartphones has found a lot of favour since its inception. It feels more convenient to charge your smartphone for a few minutes and gain more than an hour’s usage. Qualcomm has been the frontrunner in this category by tweaking their ‘Quick Charge (QC)’ fast charging standard every year. The QC 4.0 was revealed last year and found acceptance in 2017’s flagship smartphones. However, Qualcomm wasn’t satisfied and therefore have released an updated version of it, known as Quick Charge 4+.

Just like a smartphone’s naming convention of these days, the QC 4+ brings a substantial improvement over the original QC 4.0. For starters, the new convention introduces dual-channel charging, which brings a second integrated chip to let power flow through two lines. This can reduce temperatures by up to 3-degrees as the two channels can distribute current intelligently between them with less current and heat.

Also, an improved safety provision monitors the flow of charge and the temperatures, so as to prevent Galaxy Note 7-kind of mishaps while charging the phone as fast as possible.

Qualcomm themselves say that the changes aren’t big enough to consider an immediate upgrade, but it is great to know that they were able to achieve 15 percent faster charge times and 30 percent more efficiency. According to us, that is enough to make a notable difference in the world of smartphone charging.

The QC 4+ will be available in the ZTE Nubia Z17 smartphone as of now and will come in upcoming flagships from smartphone giants.
