Good, but not great
Loadout is a colourful yet violent free-to-play shooter for PC and has recently been released for the PlayStation 4. It is heavily stylised and goofy, both in its aesthetic and the way it handles.

There are two basic ways to play Loadout — PVE and PVP. The latter is far more enjoyable as unleashing your deadly arsenal of weapons on real humans is far more entertaining. It takes a while to build that arsenal without paying real money but the progression system of the campaign is far more frustrating. Thus, its best to avoid it altogether. The different game modes in competitive multiplayer are essentially variants of the types we expect from a shooter.
Loadout feels different from regular shooters because the controls are way more floaty. All weapons have a distinct sway to them, and the movement controls further add to the exhilarating experience. Its not supposed to be tight and precise; but a lot more chaotic in nature. As a result, the in-game action can get too frantic and out of control, but it remains fun throughout. The process of creating your own ultimate weapon is engaging and watching it wreck enemies in the consequent match a rewarding experience.
Just like all FTP games, Loadout does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription to play. It does have any lasting appeal and quickly becomes a grind if you haven’t used real money, or monotonous if you have. Unfair micro-transactions are a problem with this genre and Loadout does suffer from them. Still its enjoyable, and the PS4 controller has been well optimised for its unique mechanics. The immense customisation options are impressive, long after you have seen everything the game has to offer.
