The patent points towards FaceID as ‘user identification’ on the design board by the company.

The design illustrates the camera, which is placed under the ‘user interface’ category, already includes a touch sensor, haptic feedback, display and speaker.

After accomplishing an innovative and nearly successful attempt of FaceID on their flagship iPhone X, the company might be borrowing it for its next generation Apple Watch. A new patent discovered by PatentlyApple showcases the design plans of the next Apple Watch that suggests the possibility of a FaceID verification system.

The patent points towards FaceID as ‘user identification’ on the design board by the company. It illustrates the details of how the camera is being deployed into the watch, which can be used for FaceID and other applications. The design illustrates the camera, which is placed under the ‘user interface’ category, already includes a touch sensor, haptic feedback, display and speaker. However, PatentlyApple suggests that Apple has secretly mentioned only twice about the ‘user identification’ feature in the patent. This obviously doesn’t reveal the exact design and implementation of the FaceID sensor, but certainly illustrates that Apple is planning it for one of its future smartwatch models. But it could be a little tricky to implement the iPhoneX’s TrueDepth camera on the smaller confines of the Watch. There could be possibility of Apple using a different sensor for the system.

The patent also illustrates the new sensors placed in the watch band, which can determine the axial orientation of the user, by his daily activity. For example, the motion sensors will be able to measure the user's performance in terms of acceleration, trajectory of the sports instrument, etc.
