Apple AirPods explode in Tampa

After Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 debacle in 2016, the tech industry has started exercising caution over devices that utilise Lithium-ion batteries. Apple’s iPhones have been in the news for exploding every now and then around the world — most of them have faulty batteries. As if exploding smartphones weren’t dangerous enough, Apple’s wireless AirPods have now joined their ranks.

The latest incident of a pair of AirPods exploding has been uncovered in Tampa. The user claimed that he was using his AirPods while working out at the gym when one of the earbuds started emitting smoke. Fearing about a possible malfunctioning, the user removed it and went to gather help. When he returned, he found the faulty earbud completely damaged. The user described the damage as signs of an explosion, with the outer plastic melted.

Like all other wireless earphones, AirPods also use Li-ion batteries to stay awake. In this particular case, it could have been possible that there must have been some manufacturing defect in this unit. Apple has acknowledged the matter and is currently investigating the matter. It is not yet known whether the user had exposed his AirPods to some unfavourable condition or whether some kind of modification had been made to the particular unit in question.

Had the victim not noticed his AirPods releasing smoke, it could have been a possibility that his earlobe could have been burnt. What is required on Apple’s part is the implementation of a safety system that should indicate in some or the other way to warn the user of an electrical issue. If you are using AirPods, it is advisable to exercise caution while listening to them for extended sessions of usage.
