Having a smartwatch that doesn’t need charging is the ultimate fantasy for a tech lover and a little-known brand called Matrix Industries have launched a product that does exactly that. First introduced at CES 2019, the Matrix PowerWatch appears to come with all the features necessary to make it a viable smartwatch — heart rate, step counting, an always-on reflective colour screen, 200-meter water resistance, notifications and GPS. While these features are rather common, the brand also states that it lasts a long as a marathon; in other words, it is powered entirely by solar energy and body heat.

This isn’t the brand’s first foray into wearables that don’t require charging; however, the previous PowerWatch could only tell time and track steps. This was impressive but the features were pretty bare-bones.

This time around, the solar-charging along with thermoelectric enable the watch to attain more smartwatch features that also challenge the Fitbits and Garmins of the planet.

The Matrix PowerWatch works seamlessly with Apple HealthKit and Google Fit and also be used with additional third-party apps. Also, notifications will appear like other smartwatches as well.

The PowerWatch uses Ambiq Apollo 3 processor onboard and speaking of the continuous heart rate sensor, the brand claims that it and the GPS can last through a marathon. There are also some social fitness functions which help in gamifying the calories burned.

The Matrix PowerWatch is on sale on Indiegogo for USD 200 and will climb all the way up to USD 499 when it goes on sale.
