We want to do our best at World Cup: Harjeet Singh

Bengaluru: It’s 10:45 am and the Indian hockey colts are all set to warm down after another gruelling practice session at the Sports Authority of India, South Centre, here.
Harjeet Singh, makes a shrill hoot to kick-start the proceedings that is mimicked by the entire team as they start their final round of stretches. It doesn’t come as a surprise that a bunch that was relaxing immediately took positions for post-practice drills following Harjeet’s cue.

After all, there are distinct leadership qualities in the drag flicker accentuated by his stints with the senior national team. While it may explain his exalted status in the junior team, the 20-year-old is quick to dissuade any ‘senior’ talks.

“I may have been a part of the senior squad for two tournaments, but that is a thing of the past. There is no senior or junior in the team, all of us give each other equal importance,” he remarked. 

“Captaining (in previous junior tournaments) helps me focus. We are a great team so it does not feel like a burden. I have learnt a lot (with the seniors) and have improved my gameplay, but now it all has to be applied,” he added.

Asked about preparations, he said: “Right now, it all feels good. The team are confident and we want to do a great job at the Lucknow World Cup. We have to give something back to the people who expect from us.”

Having gained valuable experience in the senior squad at the Azlan Shah tournament and Champions Trophy, Harjeet knows how to maintain a good atmosphere within the team during crunch situations and in big competitions.

“The end result is not in our hands. All we need to do is give our best when we are on the field and that makes the difference,” he remarked ahead of the competition where his side will face England, South Africa and Canada in the group stage.
