We need to start preparing for Tokyo now, say archers

Mumbai: Experienced Indian archers Bombayla Devi Laishram and Atanu Das raised expectations at the Rio Olympics but neither could deliver a medal. Both the archers, still ruing the Rio Olympic loss, stressed for more facilities to start the preparations for 2020 Tokyo Olympics right now.
“Wind in competition (Rio Olympics) was a problem. Ranking event was held in open and main event in different ground with separate set up. We couldn’t gauge wind flow and direction. I struggled with the wind but gave my best shots. I want to continue and do well in the next Olympics. But for that we have to start preparing now and the facilities we got just prior to Rio Olympics should continue,” said 31-year-old Arjuna Awardee Bombayla Devi.
“I gave my hundred percent but didn’t make it. We have to play more tournaments, play more league matches to get exposure. People except results in every tournament which puts extra pressure on us. Focus should be on big events like Olympics and we should start preparing for it from now,” Atanu remarked.
Atanu also stressed that tournaments in India will increase the interest in the sport.
“Conditions don’t matter (for us) as it depends on the particular day and situation. One or two arrows decide the result and one mistake you are out. We need to bridge the gap with outsiders like Korean archers who have more exposure and sponsorship. They start from schools,” Das said.
Both the Olympians had a gala time with young archers at the D.Y. Patil stadium here who were participating in the Sports For All – a mini Olympic type event for the school kids in Mumbai. The 25-sporting extravaganza has been on since November 28 and will conclude on Monday.
“We were amazed to see so many archers here. If these kids get facilities they co go ahead. We need many more academies like Tata in a big country like India for kids to get encouraged,” Das said. “Tournaments like this give us the idea how many talented athletes we have. Facilities should continue for them to move ahead,” Bombayla Devi said.
