IND v SL, 2nd T20: Rohit Sharma's 118 powers India to series victory

Spinners Chahal and Kuldeep picked up seven wickets between them to help India win the match and take 2-0 lead in series.

Indore: Rohit Sharma struck 118 runs to help Team India clinch 88 run victory over Sri Lanka in the second T20 internationals at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Friday. With this victory India take 2-0 lead in three match series. After winning the first T20 at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Wednesday by 93 runs ,the hosts tumbled Thisara Perera’s men for 172 runs to secure easy victory. Angelo Mathews was unable to bat due to injury.

After winning the toss Sri Lanka asked India to bat again, KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma clobbered Lankan bowlers all over the ground. Rohit Sharma equaled fastest T20 hundred record set by South Africa’s David Miller as he completed the century in 35 balls which consisted of 10 sixes and 12 boundaries before dismissed for 118 runs.

Rohit and Rahul put on 165 run stand which is the highest opening stand for Team India in T20. The record was previously held by Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul who had put on 158 run stand.

After Rohit's dismissal Rahul scored his second half-century of the series (89 runs) against a toothless Sri Lankan attack. MS Dhoni also chipped in with 28 runs as both the batsman put on 87 runs stand for the third wicket. Sri Lanka came back strong by picking up a couple of wickets, in the end, to keep India under 300.

Chasing a huge target of 261 runs, the Lankans also started of to a good start with Niroshan Dickwella attacking Indian bowlers. The opener was eventually dismissed for 25 runs by Jaydev Unadkat.

Kusal Perera and Upul Tharanga joined hands as they went after Indian spinners, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav. With both Sri Lanka batsman going strong it looked like the visitors were in for a fight. After putting up 109 run stand, Tharanga was finally dismissed for 47 runs caught and bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal.

After Tharanga’s dismissal, Lankan wickets started to tumble one after another as spinners took control of the match. Kuldeep picked up three wickets in the 15th over dismissing Thisara Perera, Asela Gunaratne and Sadeera Samarawickrama. Both the spinners shared 7 wickets between them to destroy Sri Lanka batting order. Kusal Perera scored 77 runs but was not able to stop his team from losing the match and the series.

Kusal Perera and Upul Tharanga have put on 100 run stand as both of them launch attack on Indian spinners Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal.

Upul Tharanga dominating the Indian bowlers and scoring runs at good pace to keep Sri Lanka in the match. Indian bowlers have so far not been able to apply brakes on scoring.

1st innings:

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul piled misery on Sri Lanka bowlers as India scored their highest T20 total piling on 260 runs for the loss of 5 wickets in the 2nd T20I at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on Friday. Rohit Sharma played blinder of an innings as he equaled fatest T20 hundred record set my South Africa’s David Miller. Indian skipper completed century in 35 balls which consisted of 10 sixes and 12 boundaries before dismissed for 118 runs .

Rohit and KL Rahul put on 165 run stand which is the highest opening stand for Team India in T20. The record was previously held by Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul who had put on 158 run stand.

KL Rahul scored his second half century of the series as he was dismissed for 89 runs. Rahul (89) and Dhoni (28 runs) put on 87 run stand for the second wicket as Sri Lankan bowlers were hit all over the park by Indian batsman.

India 260/5 after 20 overs:

It was Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul show as both the oopners clobbered Lankan attack and MS Dhoni scored 28 runs to add more misery on the visitors. In the end the Men in Blue managed to put up huge total for Lankans to chase and keep alive the three match series.

Preview: After beating Sri Lanka by 93 runs in the opening match at Cuttack, Rohit Sharma’s Team India will once again face their neighbors in the second T20 here on Friday, looking to clinch the series.

Visitors Sri Lanka, meanwhile, will hope to keep themselves alive in the series by levelling the series with a win.

India's batting order will be depend on Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul to provide solid start at the top of the order. In the absence of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul started the first game and he silenced his critics with well made 61.

MS Dhoni, who was promoted up the order, provided the finishing touches in the first match at Cuttack.

Shreyas Iyer, who missed out on getting a big score in Cuttack, would also look to get some runs under his belt. It won’t be a surprise if they continue to dominate the Lankan bowling.

In the bowling department, Jaydev Unadkat who performed well in the first game might make way for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, while Jasprit Bumrah will spearhead the bowling attack. Meanwhile, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav will once again look to rattle Lankan batting order.

Sri Lanka, meanwhile have not been able to counter the hosts. The batsmen continue to struggle against a strong Indian bowling attack, especially the wrist spinners.

Captain Thisara Perera, Angelo Mathews and Upul Tharanga will be some of the key players who will hope to rise to the occassion, as they hope for a good show on Friday.
