ICC CWC’19: Rohit Sharma on-course to break two World Cup records of Sachin Tendulkar
Dhawan’s exit paved the way for Rohit to climb up the ladder of highest run-scorer chart after having amassed 647 runs in eight innings.
Mumbai: Rohit Sharma has already broken many records during India’s route to semi-finals. And, still there are few more records that are there for him to break. Especially, after scoring five hundreds in a single World Cup, Rohit continues to keep the Indian cricket fans engaged with his scintillating tons.
What an amazing player he has been for India during the 2019 World Cup. Especially after the departure of injured Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit single handedly took the responsibility to steer India towards a huge total or to provide quick starts during run chases. Dhawan’s exit paved the way for Rohit to climb up the ladder of highest run-scorer chart after having amassed 647 runs in eight innings.
Rohit has still got a few more records to break – especially Sachin Tendulkar’s 673 runs which the master blaster amassed during the 2003 World Cup. The hitman is just 27 runs away from becoming the first person to have scored most runs in a single World Cup.
Moreover, if Sharma hits another ton, then the 32-year-old will surpass Sachin’s World Cup ton’s record. Rohit Sharma now has five tons which is his sixth overall in the grandest stage. Coincidentally, Sachin also shares the same number of hundreds.
However, Sachin achieved the feat in 44 innings, while Rohit took 16 innings to register his sixth ton. Rohit started his World Cup 2019 with an unbeaten 122 against the Proteas. Following that knock, he amassed with knocks of 57, 140, 1, 18, 102, 104 and 103 to finish the group stage with an average of 92.42.
During India’s final league match against Sri Lanka, Rohit hit his fifth ton by scoring a four run off K Rajitha to cross the milestone set by former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara, who amassed four tons during the 2015 edition of World Cup.
Sharma is the fourth batsman after Sachin Tendulkar, Matthew Hayden and Shakib Al Hasan to have amassed above 600 runs in a single edition of World Cup. What an amazing batting display it has been really for the 2011 World Cup snubbed player.
