The 13th JK Tyre-FMSCI national rotax max karting championship is poised for a scintillating finish with as many as five racers within striking distance for the senior max title.

Vishnu Prasad, Ricky Donison, Dhruv Mohite, Nayan Chatterjee and Akash Gowda — all are going to be tied up in a close battle at the Mohite Racing Academy in Kolhapur on Sunday.

Chennai’s Vishun (Meco Racing) is the surprise leader going into this round, thanks largely to Donison of BPC Racing, who failed to finish the final race in the last round and slipped to second place. But only four points separate the two — Vishnu’s 328 to Donison’s 324 — which should not count for much over a race weekend.

Donison will look to keep his brilliant run going all through the season which saw him win the first three rounds and even the pre-final a fortnight back.

Vishnu will have to race out of his skin to keep Donison at bay to clinch the championship. While local boy Mohite is at 314 points, just 14 adrift of the leader; he will hope to convert his familiarity with the track into a distinct advantage.

The biggest challenge for the title, however, is expected to come from Mumbai lad Chatterjee. The Meco Racer has been improving with each race and will be at his aggressive best as it all comes down to the final two days of the karting championship. He is just 15 points behind the leader and will fancy his chances even more if the clouds open up and force a wet race.

In the junior max category, (age group of 13 to 16), a two-way battle is brewing between leader Manav Sharma of Faridabad (334 points) and Yash Aradhya of Bangalore (328 points). Manav of Peregrine Racing endured some bad luck in the last round and could not finish in the top three, but he somehow managed to hold on to his lead.

In the micro max category (age group of 7 to 12), all eyes will be on Shahan Ali of Meco Racing. The Agra lad, with 348 points, has a healthy 20-point lead, having won the Asian Karting Championship in the interregnum.

Arjun S. Nair of Meco (328 points) and Ruhaan Alva of Birel Art (321 points) will hope to give Shahan a run for his money though.
