The Union home ministry has proposed the creation of around 4,900 posts, including 1,950 for women, in the Delhi police. The MHA has informed Parliament that in a bid to strengthen the force, a proposal for creation of 2,907 posts has already been sent to the finance ministry for consideration. In a written reply, minister of state for home affairs Mullappally Ramachandran said another proposal for creation of 1,950 posts for women personnel has also been sent to the ministry. “There is no apparent shortage in number of police personnel to the population in Delhi. Approximately, there is one police officer for every 200 citizens,” he said. The MHA also informed Parliament that the MHA has asked Delhi Police to constitute a special investigation team to probe allegations of sexual exploitation of women by its personnel, levelled by child trafficking victims before the J.S. Verma committee. “Yes Sir. The Justice Verma Committee report has mentioned an incident of alleged gang rape in its appendices section stating that as per witness three policemen in a PCR Van abducted a girl from near a temple situated close to a ridge in Delhi,” Mr Ramachandran said in a written reply. He said the ministry had sought a report from the Delhi police on the issue which was found unsatisfactory.
