Sushil Kumar not part of WFI’s Olympic camp
Wrestler Sushil Kumar was on Sunday left out of the Wrestling Federation of India’s Rio preparatory camp, that begins in Sonepat from Wednesday, further denting his chances of competing at the Olympic Games. The development follows a bitter “fight” between Sushil and fellow wrestler Narsingh Yadav, both of whom are vying for a Rio berth in the 74 kg category.
WFI president Brij Bhushan Singh Sharan said the camp — postponed by a day — was set up “only” for the Rio Olympic berth earning wrestlers, and “thus Sushil’s name was not included in the list”.
He, however, added that “if Sushil wants to be a part of the camp, he is most welcome”.
“Yogeshwar Dutt has already been training in Sonepat for the past few days. The other wrestlers will join him soon,” Brij Bhushan said.
In each category, there will be at least three wrestlers in the camp, including the 74kg.
On this, Brij Bhushan said, “All the wrestlers choose their sparring partners and the federation had no say in that.
“It’s the wrestlers choice to opt for their own sparring partners in order to avoid any unwarranted injury or harm during the camp.”
On the Sushil vs Narsingh trials for a Rio berth, the WFI president said they were awaiting the government’s response in the matter.
