Strong field for 2nd edition

Kolkata will witness the pride of Indian athletics when the second edition of the Tata Steel Kolkata 25K takes place on Sunday. India’s elite runners, including Rio Olympics qualifiers, will come together in the City of Joy to make a mark at the country’s first accredited 25 km distance running event.

Highlighting the runners at the event is Kerala’s O.P. Jaisha, the current full marathon national record holder which she has achieved at the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon 2015. Her personal best was came in the full marathon at the 2015 Worlds in Beijing.

Jaisha is also a former national record holder in the 3000 metres steeplechase.Lalita Babar, the Central Railway long-distance runner, is the current national record holder in the event. She is a three-time winner of the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon and recently won the Federation Cup Senior National Athletics Championships.

Babar is the national half marathon record holder for her performance at the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon this year and will look to put up a strong challenge to Jaisha this weekend.

Sudha Singh, a consistent performer in steeplechase events and Asiad gold medallist in 2010, is another strong contender.

Other runners to watch out for are O. Sanaton Singh (Indian Army), Elam Singh, a 31-year-old Army Sports Institute (Pune) athlete.
