The Indian was all class and grit as she won five points in a row to clinch the first game 21-16.
Sindhu and Marin made unforced errors but Marin’s smashes were doing wonders for her as she continued to lead the first game against the Indian in the Rio Olympics final. While there were some uncharacteristic mistakes from both the finalist, Marin made Sindhu run across the court.
However, the Indian held her nerve as she made a late comeback in the first game to take the one-game lead.
Here are the live updates.
India will bank on PV Sindhu as the shuttler takes on Carolina Marin in the Olympic final of women’s singles event in Rio de Janeiro on Friday. If Sindhu beats the Spaniard, she will become the first Indian woman and second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold.
The Hyderabadi shuttler has put up a brilliant display to march into the final. While she dominated her semifinal opponent, her quarterfinal win over the World No 2 Wang Yihan continues to be a talking point. However, the Indian will need to up her game by quite a few notches as she faces World No 1 in the summit clash.
Marin, who defeated the defending gold medallist Li Xuerui in the semifinal, is known for her powerful smashes and never-say-die attitude. The Spaniard also enjoys a 4-2 winning record against Sindhu.
