Lifters eye Olympics berths at Asian meet

Commonwealth Games champions Sathish Kumar Sivalingam and K. Sanjita Chanu will spearhead the Indian challenge at the senior Asian weightlifting championship, which will serve as the qualification event for the Olympics at Tashkent in Uzbekistan from April 21 to 30.
Sathish (men’s 77kg) and Sanjita (women’s 48kg) won gold medals at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, while Sukhen Dey (men’s 56kg), who had also bagged the top position at Glasgow, failed to make it to the team for the Asian Championship.
The men’s team comprises nine lifters, including CWG silver medallist Vikas Thakur (85kg).
The women’s group of seven will see Glasgow silver and bronze medallists — Mirabai Chanu (48kg) and Punam Yadav (63kg) respectively — besides Sanjita Chanu, in action.
A 10-member support staff will accompany the 16 lifters during the crucial tournament.
