India assured of two medals in mixed doubles at commonwealth TT

India were assured of a silver and bronze medals in the mixed doubles event of the 20th Avadh Common-wealth table tennis championships in Surat on Saturday.

India were assured of a silver and bronze medals in the mixed doubles event of the 20th Avadh Common-wealth table tennis championships in Surat on Saturday.

Of the three Singapore and Indian pairs, the latter had a better percentage winning three quarter-finals while Singapore’s top-seeded duo of Lin Hu and Zhou Yihan managed to beat India’s Anthony Amalraj and K. Shamini 11-3, 11-3, 11-9.

Among the other Indian combinations, Soumyajit Ghosh and Mouma Das downed Singapore’s second-seeded Chen Feng and Yee Herng Hwe 13-11, 11-1, 11-6 and earned a semi-final meeting with the top Singaporean pair.

G. Sathiyan and Ankita Das defeated third seeds David McBeath and Karina Le Fevre 11-4, 9-11, 11-2, 115 for the second semi-final showdown against Sanil Shetty and Manika Batra, who blanked out Singapore Chew Zhe Yu Clarence and Lin Ye.

In the singles, all the four Indian men and women paddlers, who went through the qualification process, moved into the main draw.

Sanil Shetty and Sudhanshu Grover received first-round byes, thanks to their higher rankings. In the top-half of men’s draw, Abhishek Yadav runs into top-seed Li Hu of Singapore in the pre-quarters while Anthony Amalraj will meet England’s David McBeath, who poses some troubles to the hosts in team event.

Shetty was lucky enough to get the best possible draw as he will meet Singapore’s weak link in team event, Chew Zhe Yu Clerence in the last 16 and is expected to go through to the quarter-finals.
