The German word for a mobile phone is “Handy”. Seen from the perspective of English language, a mobile phone by far is the most handy thing in everyone’s hands these days. From clicking endless selfies to finding places and for that matter, anything under the sun, the “Handy” is indeed very handy.
Much before the mobile phones began to be handy and were used as alarm clocks, among other things, and when one was not readily available, the other sure way, as taught to us by my beloved papa, was, “Just ask your guardian angel to wake you up at the fixed time”. And bang! It worked always, without fail. Thanks to the many modern technologies, the “Handy” being just one of them, we are slowly but surely losing touch with many God given, unfathomable gifts and wonders to us individuals and in nature.
For Christians, October, like other months, brings some important feast days of saints to remember them and to emulate their teachings. Right in the beginning of October, Christians celebrate the feast of the “Guardian Angels”, deeply treasured by most believers. Unfortunately, many of us remain unaware of a guardian angel’s presence within us and therefore are unable to tap into the great many resources provided us by God through a guardian angel.
Christians believe that at each one’s birth, God gifts him/her a “guardian angel”, that accompanies, protects, and eventually leads each one to one’s creator. Devotion to the angels is, basically an expression of faith in God’s enduring love and providential care extended to each person day in and day out. Though this devotion to angels comes in play mostly seeking protection and guidance for “children”, their presence is helpful for all. For, they represent individuals before God, to watch over them always, to help them pray, and to present their souls to God at death.
A few modern Christian theologians have raised problems with the concept of and devotion to the angels. Jesus’ words in Matthew’s gospel, however, come in support to remove the doubts about their role in our life: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.”
Why not then be reawakened to “guardian angel’s” presence in us that actually helps us pray and grow in our spiritual life, apart from being always by our side, especially during difficult moments? Since an angel opens great possibilities for us, let us then begin all over again to pray what we were taught as children, “Angel of God, my guardian dear; To whom His love commits me here; ever this day, be at my side; to light and guard, to rule and guide, amen”.
