Legendary cartoonist Chandi Lahiri dies aged 88

According to reports the cartoonist passed away around 1.50pm in the hospital.

Well known cartoonist Chandi Lahiri passed away on Thursday afternoon.

Unwell for the last few days, Lahiri who had been admitted to the R G Kar Hospital on Tuesday was 88 at the time of his death.

According to reports the cartoonist passed away around 1.50pm in the hospital. He is survived by his daughter Trina Lahiri who too is a well-known artist.

Speaking to a Bengali daily, Lahiri said that her father had been admitted to the hospital for his detoriating health.

Born on March 13, 1931 in Nadia district, Lahiri became intricately involved in politics as a young teenager.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took to twitter after his death to offer condolences.

 

The famed artist started his career in 1952 at the Dainik Loksevak newspaper as a reporter. His work as a cartoon artist began in 1961. He went on to join Anandabazaar Patrika in 1962 and would go on to work with them for 50 years.

He leaves behind a legacy that can be found in children's books such as Michke and Nengti and books such as Bideshider Chokhe Bangla, Chandir Chandipath, Bangalr Cartoon Itihash among others.
