Nineteen musicians performing different ragas for 19 hours — this is what an upcoming classical music concert in the city, is promising. Beginning at 6 am on Sunday, February 21, the concert will go on till 1.30 am on February 22 at the Shanmukhananda hall in Sion. It has been conceptualised by Durga Jasraj, founder and director of Art and Artistes; Pancham Nishad and the Sri Shanmukhananda Fine Arts and Sangeetha Sabha. The artistes’ line-up for the evening includes Kishori Amonkar, Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Ayaan and Amaan Ali Khan and Pandit Vishwamohan Bhatt, among others.
Renowned flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia will commence the concert on Sunday morning, and said of the initiative, “This is a timely effort to create awareness about the traditions of Indian music, which is based on the profound research of our ancient scholars.”
Vocalist Kishori Amonkar also spoke about her performance, which will conclude the concert, and how the ragas reflected the changing day and seasons. “The great seers of music experienced the subtle changes in nature and time and propounded a theory of seasonal and time-based melodies. If sung or played as per the theory, (the ragas) are expected to create a very positive and serene effect,” she said.
Putting this unique concert together was one way for the organisers to put the spotlight back on the richness and diversity of Indian classical music. “When I was a child, I remember attending concerts which would go on till the wee hours of the morning,” recounted Durga Jasraj. “One got to hear so many different beautiful ragas by the performing artistes. But now, since all concerts only happen in the evening, I feel that the rich traditional wealth of Hindustani classical ragas will just get lost and not be presented to the next generation of listeners and music lovers. This was the genesis of our concert.”
