Youth sets coach on fire to get jailed

In order to be imprisoned, a 25-year-old man lit fire at a ladies’ compartment between Churchgate and Marine Lines stations at 4.10 am on Sunday. During interrogation, he also confessed that in another incident he had set fire to a bus but when he was not arrested for the act, he decided to set the train’s coach on fire.

“When we asked him the motive behind his intention to get jailed, the accused said that he wanted to be put behind bars or else his family members would kill him. He hails from Nagpur but has been living in Mumbai since the past six years. He is unemployed and lives off begging,” said Shailendra Kumar, divisional railway manager (Mumbai Central) of Western Railway.

The fire was doused in 30 minutes but the ladies compartment has been damaged. The fire had also spread to one of the general compartments but was soon brought under control, officials said.

One of the railway workers noticed the fire in the ladies’ coach and alerted others. When they reached the coach to douse the fire, they saw the accused sitting near the door. “He has now been taken into GRP custody. He may be produced in court on Monday,” said Mr Kumar. “The accused appears to be sane but further investigation will reveal if he has any mental disorder,” he added.

The youth has been arrested under sections 436/427 of Indian Penal Code, section 51 (1) under Indian Railway Act. “He has been accused of destroying public property and also of criminal activity,” said an officer.
