A man killed his younger brother but the family members narrated a different version of the incident to the police leading them to register an accidental death report. However, on a second round of investigation, crime branch officials grilled the family members, which revealed the true story.
Jito D’Souza, Nayzil and Jion were brothers and staying in Kanjur village with their mother and Nayzil’s wife. Jito, the youngest of the three was a heavy drinker. On July 8, when he came home in an inebriated state, he started beating his mother and later attacked Nayzil’s wife 7-months pregnant wife. According to police officials, “Nayzil got so angry on Jito’s behaviour that he took out a knife and assaulted Jito. He died on the spot. On realising the incidents and the consequences that it would ensue, the family members decided to hide the truth from the police and fabricated a cause of Jito’s death.”
Kanjurmar police said, “The family informed us that Jito came in a drunken state at home when he could not control his balance and fell down on a glass table, fatally injuring himself. When he was then taken to the nearby hospital, he was declared dead.”
Initially, the Kanjurmarg police officials had registered an accidental death report and closed the case. Later, a resident from the same area gave a tip off to the crime branch officials about Jito’s murder. The officials said, “On the tip off we started investigating the case again. We called the two brothers, family members and neighbours. During interrogation Nayzil confessed to the crime and told us that the family members had decided to concoct a story.”
