Youth held for stealing jewellery worth Rs 40 lakh
Nerul police on Sunday night arrested a youth for allegedly befriending a rich woman so that he could rob her.
According to the police, the accused has been identified as Sumit Jadhav (21), a resident of Turbhe area. Jadhav befriended Trupti Shetty, a resident of Nerul. He used to visit Trupti’s college and used to help her in studies and other work and also often visited her home.
Since he was aware where all the expensive valuables were kept at Trupti’s home, he would often make do with them, the police said. Last month, Trupti and her family left town for a holiday. Jhadav, who knew they kept their house key under the doormat, entered the house in their absence and stole articles worth Rs 40 lakh.
A senior police inspector from Nerul police station Sangita Alphaso said, “We received a complaint of robbery from Sarvaji Shetty four days ago. During investigation, we found that the lock was not broken and several other things were left untouched, which means someone close who knew the family well was the culprit. After this we interrogated every family member. At that time Trupti told us about her friend Sumit who used visit and that he knows about the key under the doormat. We detained him from house, interrogated him and he accepted the crime.”
The police said Jadhav has a debt of Rs 7 lakh and he stole in order to repay the loan. He was caught when he was trying sell the stolen jewellery.
