As a gift to all the women police officials in the state, director general of police Pravin Dixit declared that all the stations across Maharashtra would have a woman officer as its station in-charge for the day, on Tuesday.

The announcement was made to mark International Women’s Day and also to motivate women officers. “This will not only motivate our women officers but also encourage women to approach the police to file complaints as they might be more comfortable talking to a woman officer about their complaints,” said Mr Dixit.

Speaking on the capabilities of women officers in the state police force, the DG further said, “Our women officers are capable of handling the toughest of situations. And our move to have them as the station in-charge throughout the state on Women’s Day is an effort to make them feel special.”

To celebrate the day, every police station in the city held training sessions on law, social media crime, art of living etc. to improve the skills of women officers and also help them manage their stress levels. In certain police stations like Ghatkopar, Pantnagar and LT Marg, women officers were given flowers and were also felicitated based on their performance.

Commenting on the celebrations, constable Kranti Patil from MRA Marg police station said, “Being an officer in-charge of the police station is not new for us, but being acknowledged by senior officers and encouraged to approach them in order to work better is motivational.” A police inspector (crime) Bharti from Vikhroli police station said,

“We work on cases daily but it feels good when seniors take a day to appreciate our work and make us feel special.”

“As women police officers are mostly overworked, they do not get time to beat stress and so we organised a two-hour session on the art of living to enable them to relax and take a break from their hectic schedules,” said senior police inspector Sukhlal Varpe of the MRA Marg police station.
