In a telling incident, a woman administered poison to her three minor children before consuming it herself after her husband, a fisherman by profession, expressed inability to work extra hours for the family to better celebrate Diwali.
While the woman and two of her children died, her son is still alive but in a critical condition.
The incident occurred at Ambivili in Mohne village near Kalyan.
The deceased have been identified as Lakshmi Pradeep Waghe (30), Najuka Waghe (10) and Vansh Waghe (7). Vishal Waghe, the survivor, is being treated in hospital.
Khadakpada police officer said, “The incident took place at around 8am when Pradeep Waghe (32), Lakshmi’s husband and fisherman, went out fishing. Upon his return at around 10 am, he saw his wife and children lying unconscious on the floor. He immediately rushed them to the nearby government hospital, where Lakshmi, Najuka and Vansh died during treatment. They had consumed the chemical that is used to kill rats.”
“During our interrogation, we came to know that Lakshmi had a quarrel with her husband the previous night on the issue of extra work.
“She wanted Pradeep to go fishing in the night as well to get a good amount of money so that they could celebrate Diwali in a better manner. They did not buy the kids any new clothes for which Lakshmi argued with Pradeep. However, Pradeep refused to go fishing in the night owing to the high tide and went the next morning. Disheartened, Lakshmi could not take it in the right spirit and decided to kill her children and herself,” he said.
Senior Police Inspector of Khadakpada police station, Gulabrao Gore, said, “We have registered a case of abetment of suicide against Pradeep. We are investigating the matter thoroughly and will soon take necessary action.”
