Woman kills 18- month-old son

The Mumbra police arrested a 28-year-old woman for allegedly killing her 18-month-old son and injuring her other 11-year-old son.

The Mumbra police arrested a 28-year-old woman for allegedly killing her 18-month-old son and injuring her other 11-year-old son. The woman also allegedly attempted suicide after attacking her two sons. She claimed she was frustrated because of health problems for the past few months.

According to the police, the accused, identified as Sampa Chinmay Karamkar (28), stays in Diva with her two sons: Ishaan (18 months) and Chayaan (11) and husband Chinmay Chitranj Karamkar (27). Chinmay works with a jewellery shop in Zaveri Bazaar.

The police during investigation found that Sampa had been having health problems since June 23 this year.

She was irritated with her own sickness and fed up of taking care of children in such a condition, sources said.

The incident took place on July 13, when Chayaan started crying after their cable TV connection stopped working because the monthly fee had not been paid.

A frustrated Sampa took a sharp knife (a kind of Boti knife, used to cut vegetables) and first killed her 18-month-old son by slitting his neck, sources said.

Later she tried to slit the throat of Chayaan but he resisted and hence, did not suffer major injuries. She also tried to kill herself but neighbours intervened and managed to stop her.

“The son who survived, Chayaan, got an alert and informed the neighbours, who came to help. The children were undergoing treatment at Mumbra-devi hospital. Chayaan, who was unconscious, later confirmed that his mother had attacked both his brother and him and later attempted suicide,” a Mumbra police official said.

A case has been registered at the Mumbra police station under Sections 302 (punishment for murder), 307 (attempt to murder) and 309 of the Indian Penal Code.

The accused was produced in the Thane sessions court on Thursday and was given judicial custody of 14 days.
