The Railway Police Force (RPF) arrested a 45-year-old woman who was allegedly trying to get away with stealing two commodes and three washbasins from Karmabhoomi Express on Saturday.
The woman, identified as Sarita Gupta, had got off at the train’s stop at Ghatkopar as it made its way to Lokmanya Tilak Terminus (LTT) at around 10.30 am.
Gupta drew the suspicion of an RPF constable Suresh Pandey, who was patrolling the station when she got down with a huge gunny bag in her possession. When asked what was in the bag, Gupta got nervous and finally revealed the contents. “Petty theft of railway property is common. Some steal copper wires from the tracks but this incident was a little bizarre as she was taking away bulky toilets,” said a RPF official from Ghatkopar station.
Gupta has been booked under the Railway Property (Unlawful Possession) Act by which she can be charged with a fine of Rs 1, 000 to 5,000 or imprisoned for five-years.
Passenger trains that enter and leave the city have been facing such thefts despite the RPF’s best efforts. “Yes we have been trying to curb such incidents as much as we can but the people who want to steal try and find novel ways to do so,” said Central Railways (CR) senior divisional security commissioner Sachin Bhalode.
The RPF has increased its presence at all terminal stations like CST, LTT, Bandra and Mumbai Central to stop such incidents.
