In case of a couple that allegedly took ill after consuming food served on the Madgaon Express, the man is critical while the wife, who was rushed to hospital, has been declared dead.

Ziaur Rahman (32) and wife, Nazia (28) alighted from Madgaon Express at CST late night on April 22. They decided to rest in retiring room number one, where they consumed a packet of vegetable biryani that they had bought on the train. Soon after, Nazia started feeling nauseous. Upon railway officials informing a worried Ziaur that the room had recently undergone pest control, the couple changed rooms however both kept vomiting frequently. It wasn’t until Nazia fell unconscious that officials rushed the couple to St George’s Hospital, where she was declared dead even before admission.

Police officials said Ziaur, a Naik in the Indian Army, had been recently transferred to Tamil Nadu. He was a resident of West Bengal but was on holiday. The couple had further plans to visit north India. GRP Investigation Officer, PI Manik Sathe, said, “After we took them to the hospital, our officials conducted a room check. The room had recently undergone pest control. The couple had biryani with alcohol and then slept, when they started feeling uneasy. They then changed their room but then too, the woman vomited several times till the next afternoon.”

Mr Sathe added, “We called the BMC pest control team and pantry team for investigation. Later, we called forensic laboratory officers who took some samples from the room and food dishes. Also, samples from Nazia’s body have been sent to FSl. Soon, the report will come and we will get an idea what is the cause behind the death.” Railway PRO was unavailable for comment.
