A 21-year-old woman has delivered a baby girl in a local train Monday morning even as she was on her way to a private hospital in Virar. A railway official said it was a normal delivery and both the mother and the baby were in good health.

According to railway officials, the woman Namrata Yogesh Kini and her husband Yogesh Kini were travelling in the general compartment of the local. When the train was about to reach Virar, Namrata started experiencing severe labour pains and delivered the baby around 9.30 am.

Later when the train reached Virar, commuters informed the stationmaster who along with women Railway Protection Force (RPF) officials got into the compartment and provided primary medical help to the woman. Later, both the mother and child were shifted to Sanjeevani Hospital in Virar.

Namrata’s husband Yogesh runs a catering business in the Safale area. He told The Asian Age, “We were on our way to admit Namrata to a hospital in Virar, but in the compartment she had labour pains. All the other women in the compartment came forward, and helped in the delivery. Later at Virar, they called the stationmaster. Now both are in the hospital and doing fine. I am thankful to the RPF and Virar stationmaster for their help. As of now, I will calling my daughter ‘Baby’, as after delivery all the women passengers in the train had exclaimed, ‘It’s a baby’.”

An RPF constable Sonali, who attended to Namrata said that the stationmaster informed them about the baby around 9.30 am on Monday. “When I reached the compartment, I found that the baby and her mother were lying unconscious. I covered them in a blanket, and took them to the hospital.”
