A 67-year-old woman, Archana Anant Vichare, was found murdered in the bedroom of her house in Charkop on Saturday evening. Later on the same day, the Charkop police detained the deceased’s 37-year-old daughter-in-law, Aarati Ajit Vichare after they found her behaviour suspicious. While further investigation is underway, till the time of going to press, officials were not ready to comment on the motive behind the murder.

The incident occurred in flat number 26 on the 6th floor of Aanad Sagar building in Charkop sector number one. The deceased was staying with her son Ajit (40), daughter-in-law Aarti (37) and a grandson (13). Ajit works with BEST and is posted at the Malad bus depot.

When he returned home at about 4.30pm on Saturday, he found the door locked. Ajit was shocked as his wife never went out without informing him so he immediately called her on her mobile number but the phone was locked. Ajit then approached his neighbours as Aarti would often keep extra keys to the house with the neighbours. Extra keys taken, Ajit entered his house only to find his mother lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom. He called for help and later, police was informed.

Police sources said that when Ajit was outside, he called his brother-in-law who stays in Karjat just to inquire about his wife when the latter told him that Aarti was at her parents’ house in Karjat. Police officials found Aarti’s rushing off to Karjat without informing anyone suspicious and decided to detain her.

Police sources said the senior citizen had been hit behind her head three to four times with a weight exercise tool.
