Winter leaves Mumbai under the weather

With a 10-degree difference in the maximum and minimum temperature in the city, paediatricians are seeing spike in cases of cough, cold, fever, pneumonia and asthma. General physicians and the paediatricians in the city are getting over 30 to 35 cases everyday, which according to them, is a 25 per cent rise in patients compared to last month.
While the city continues to sweat at 33 degrees Celsius in the daytime, the nights are colder than last week, with the temperature dipping to 13 degrees C, the lowest of the month and second lowest of the season. In the next 48 hours, the temperature is expected to plummet further to 12 degrees C at night. The Indian Meteorological Department is also expecting showers in the coming week from Tuesday to Thursday. “We have started seeing a spike in diseases in kids and even in the general population due to varied fluctuation in temperature. Children are getting infections more often, as they go out to school in the morning and its cooler by that time,” said Dr Pradip Shah, general physician, Fortis Hospital.
The physicians have started seeing a rise in asthma cases. “Pollutants settle down in the air in the mornings and evening due to which asthmatic patients have started complaining and are facing inconvenience. I am seeing over 20 ashthma patients every week,” said Dr Rajesh Jharia, general physician, Beams Hospital.
Doctors are also seeing severe cases of pneumonia, especially in aged patients. “Last week itself I admitted over seven patients who had developed severe pneumonia. All of them were above 50 and were in great requirement of care. Their cough and cold became serious, developing into pneumonia. The elderly have to take care of their health,” said Dr Jharia.
The doctors suggested taking proper care before venturing out of house in the nighttime and daytime.
“We must gargle twice in the day to avoid any infection. In case one contracts any infection, the help of a doctor must be taken immediately,” said Dr Jharia.
“Children can contract cough, cold and fever. People are also at high risk of getting headaches, viral fever and influenza. Proper care like the right clothing, washing hands and avoiding air conditioning must be taken,” said Dr Bhupendra Awasthi, paediatrician, Surya Health Clinic.
