Will not tolerate errors: Civic chief
With the monsoon just round the corner, BMC chief Ajoy Mehta has directed civic officials to stay on their toes to tackle any emergency.
With the monsoon just round the corner, BMC chief Ajoy Mehta has directed civic officials to stay on their toes to tackle any emergency. Human errors will not be pardoned in civic works during monsoon, he has warned them.
A monthly review meeting was held in the BMC headquarters on Saturday, in which Mr Mehta took stock of pre-monsoon preparatory works in the city. He asked civic officials to ensure that everything is in order to deal with any crisis during monsoon. “If any mishap happens due to natural calamities, then it can be understood. But no human errors will be pardoned. Excuses like dewatering pumps were not working, there was no diesel etc will not be tolerated,” he said.
Last year, several dewatering pumps were found not working during the heavy rains in the low-lying areas, causing a lot of inconvenience to people.
This year, the BMC has made available 292 dewatering pumps in all wards during the monsoon. In addition to this, two additional pumps will be kept in each ward to deal with emergencies.
“The assistant commissioners should ensure that there is adequate fuel for these dewatering pumps and they are in proper working condition by holding regular tests. The pump operators should also be competent,” said Mr Mehta.
To ensure proper works by contractors during the monsoon, Mr Mehta has directed civic officials to make surprise visits to the ongoing civic works in the city.
Ahead of the monsoon, the BMC has undertaken several civic works like desilting, road repair, trenches filling etc. There are many complaints that these works are not done properly, causing inconvenience to the people.
