The Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) has claimed that though it has decided to adopt the Tunnelling Boring Machine (TBM) method, it will also have to adopt blasting method due to the challenging nature of the city’s first 33.5-km Metro-3 underground corridor from Colaba to Seepz. The TBM method is used as an alternative to drilling and blasting method for construction of underground tunnels. “Mumbai has different set of challenges compared to Delhi, Chennai and Bangalore where underground corridors have been constructed or are being constructed,” said a MMRC official.
He added, “First, the soil needs to be loosen in order to start off with the work for tunnelling and when it comes to Mumbai there will be stretches and alignments where we will have to use different methods.”
