‘War against Pak should be for nation, not votes’

Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray has said that if war were to break out between India and Pakistan, it should be ‘for the nation and not for votes’. The Sena chief’s statement comes in the wake of the terror attack in Uri in Jammu and Kashmir in which 18 soldiers lost their lives. Making a veiled attack on the BJP-led Union government, Mr Thackeray said that the party had promised to be tough on Pakistan, during its election campaigns.
Terming the Uri attack infuriating, Mr Thackeray said the Centre should snap ties with the neighbouring country. When asked if the Sena was in favour of waging war with Pakistan, Mr Thackeray said that someone had to have guts. “The Sena has always opposed Pakistan. Their artists and cricketers are welcomed here, but we do not get similar treatment there. If the war is to take place, it should be for the nation and not for votes,” Mr Thackeray told reporters.
The Sena leader said the Uri attack could not be tolerated and that it was time to teach Pakistan a lesson. “Should we maintain diplomatic relations while attacks take place We just express our anger after every attack and then forget all about it. Pakistan should be taught a lesson in its own way. It makes no sense to keep calm. India has to snap ties with Pakistan at all levels,” he said.
