Slain RTI activist Bhupendra Vira’s family has alleged that ex-corporator Razzak Khan and his four sons conspired and plotted to kill him. The family, which held a press conference in the city on Wednesday, said that even though they were happy with the police investigation being conducted at present, the cops should have acted on Vira’s complaints when he was alive.
“My father lodged numerous complaints against Khan in an attempt to bring to light the various illegalities that he indulged in in the area. But the police never even registered an FIR and only registered a non-cognisable offence and also simultaneously informed Khan, causing him to register a cross complaint against my father,” said Mayur Vira, Bhupendra’s son.
Mayur told the media that his family had informed the police that they suspected not just Razzak and Amjad, one of his sons, but his three other sons as well. “While the trigger might have been pulled by Amjad, the plot had been conspired by the rest of the family. The police should look into their involvement as well,” Mayur said.
He revealed that an RTI plea filed by his father had brought to light 42 illegal water connections owned and operated by Razzak. “He (Razzak) tells everybody that he is the landlord of the area and then collects money to give people water connections. If they stand up to him, he disconnects their connections until they pay him a certain amount,” Mayur said. He added that all the connections are residential ones, but are being used for commercial purposes — some to supply water to Razzak’s various businesses.
Mayur added that he had faith in the police investigation and said he hoped that there were more arrests.
