Education minister Vinod Tawde on Thursday assured the Legislative Council that the new Maharashtra Universities Act would be enacted in the Winter Session and elections to various administrative bodies of universities would be held in June 2017.
Mr Tawde was replying to queries on the status of universities running without any elected senate, management or academic council owing to elections being suspended in anticipation of the new Act.
Shiv Sena legislator Neelam Gorhe during Question Hour pointed out that all universities in the state were functioning without proper administrative and academic bodies since the past two years, and demanded to know why elections were not being held for the same. “Elections have been suspended in most universities on the pretext of the new Act, hence we would like to know when the Act will be enacted,” she questioned.
In reply to Ms Gorhe’s question, Mr Tawde said that the new Act would be tabled and passed in the Winter Session after which, elections would be held to the senate, management council and academic council in June 2017.
When another legislator insisted on knowing about the erratic functioning of universities, the minister said there was a provision in the Maharashtra Universities Act, 1994, for the appointment of ad-hoc committees.
“In all universities where the term of elected members has ended, ad-hoc committees have been formed and they are carrying out various functions of universities,” he said.
