The Vasantdada College of Engineering at Sion has found itself in a spot of bother as it failed to inform students about the possibility of their admission being cancelled if the court vacates the interim stay based on which it has managed to conduct admissions despite a No Admission order being issued by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The AICTE has been asked by an NGO to initiate contempt proceedings against the college for misleading students. The college has meanwhile denied the allegations and said that it has abided by court instructions.

According to Prof Sadanand Shelgaonkar of the Citizen Forum for Sanctity in Educational Institutions, an NGO, the court while issuing the interim stay had clearly mentioned that the college had to inform students that their admissions would be subject to the court’s decision. It meant that students could not demand equity in case of the college failing to continue and the AICTE’s order barring the college from conducting admissions for the academic year 2016-17 being upheld.

“The college has neither mentioned the court’s instructions on its website or in the admission advertisements. This is a clear indicator the college is misguiding students who are taking admission to the college,” said Mr Shelgaonkar.

However, Shailesh Mokashi, assistant registrar of the Vasantdada Patil College, said the allegations were baseless. “The college has uploaded the court notice on its official website and also made a note in the admission advertisement,” he said.
