The Association of Managements of Unaided and Private Medical and Dental Colleges (AMUPMDC) will file an appeal against the Supreme Court order that denies them the freedom to conduct its own common entrance test (CET) for medical and dental college admissions. Following a members meet on Wednesday, the association said it might consider filing a fresh petition in high court.
According to the association, the petition dismissed by the SC was meant only for the medical postgraduate entrance tests.
“The association has challenged the clause in the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Fees) Act, 2015, which stipulates that admissions to all medical and dental colleges are to be done through the state CET only. As the judgement on the case is still pending, the SC has asked the association to await the outcome of that case while dismissing the petition seeking independence to conduct private CET,” said a member of the AMUPMDC.
Meanwhile, officials from Directorate of Medical Education and Research that oversees the admission process to medical and dental colleges, said the association was disputing the clause that made it mandatory for all admissions to be done through a single state body.
“Even though the counselling round for admission to postgraduate courses will be starting in April, private colleges are yet to submit details of their seats. Some colleges that are part of the state’s Centralised Admission Process (CAP) have submitted details of only 50 per cent of the seats while they are supposed to submit details of 85 per cent of the seats,” said the official.
“As per the new act, private colleges can fill up the 15 per cent institutional quota while the remaining seats are to be allotted through CAP that will be conducted by the state’s CET Cell,” the official added.
Meanwhile, AMUPMDC said that they are also consulting their lawyers before deciding on the next course of action.
