Two workers die after falling into ring well, police books contractor

Two workers fell and died inside a 2.5-feet in diameter and 40-feet deep ring well tunnel at Babasaheb Jaikar Marg, Javhar Mansion Society, Fanaswadi in Girgaum. The LT marg police is investigating the case and have filed a case against the contractor who didn’t provide safety equipments to the workers.

According to police officials of LT Marg police station, the deceased have been identified as a Vasant Jawale (50) and Balu Jawale (40), both brothers who were cleaning the ring well in the afternoon. The society members called them as for the past two days, the water flow had been blocked in the ring well. So, four workers, including the deceased, started work by 11.30 am. They cleaned the choked ring well and were about to leave when Vasant Jawale went again into the ring well to check the situation. At that time, the rope he was using broke and he fell down. To save him, Balu also got down but as there were no sufficient equipment with them they got stuck there.

The fire protection service was called at 12.17 pm. The rescue team reached the place at 12.30 pm. Both the men were removed from the ring well by the firemen within 40 minutes with the help of a rope ladder. Both the deceased were taken to the Nair hospital but were declared dead during treatment.

The LT Marg police officials said, “The post-mortem report will soon come out, but we are filing an FIR against the contractor because he didn’t provide harness and some important safety equipment to them; it was complete negligence on his part.”
