An 18-year-old boy in Nashik died after he fell into the Waldevi dam while clicking a selfie on Saturday morning. His friend, who jumped in to save him, also drowned. There have been four selfie-related deaths in the state so far.

The incident occurred when 10 college students went for a picnic to the dam near Ghoti in Nashik district on Saturday. According to Wadivhare police station in-charge Manohar Patil, during the picnic Sourabh Chulbhar (18), lost his balance when he was taking his picture while standing on a rock near the dam. His friend, Ajinkya Gaikar (18), immediately jumped into the water to save him, but did not manage to and both the boys drowned. Later some villagers rushed to the spot and fished out the bodies with the help of local fishermen. Both the bodies were sent to Nashik Civil Hospital for a postmortem after the panchanama.

Senior police Inspector Manohar Patil said that the postmortem report said the cause of death was by asphyxia due to drowning. “The bodies were handed over to their families late on Saturday and were cremated,” Mr Patil said.
