After the accident, traffic policemen in Thane were seen stopping bike-borne Govindas, or Dahi Handi participants, speeding on their motorcycles.
The two scooterists were killed in the accident early on Thursday morning when they were returning home after breaking Dahi Handis post 12 am in the Diva area. The police said the youngsters were killed on the spot when they came underneath a truck on the Kalwa-Kharegaon Road. The accident took place around 3.30 am when the Activa scooter the two were on skid while overtaking a truck, and a heavy truck that was behind them mowed them down.
The deceased have been identified as Suresh Khot (20) and Sanjiv Sawant (23), both residents of Diva.
To curb such incidents, traffic policemen in Thane stopped people who were triple-riding on bikes and those who were driving unnecessarily fast, registering 70 cases in the process.
