Two die as dumper hits bike
In a fatal hit-and-run accident, a dumper driver allegedly attempted to flee from the spot after his vehicle hit three men riding on a bike leading to the death of two of them on the Western Express Highway in the early hours of Monday in Borivali (east). Some motorists, including activist Salim Charania chased and caught the driver and he was later handed over to the police.
According to the Kasturba Marg police, the incident occurred at around 1 am on the Western Express Highway, some distance ahead of Metro Shopping Centre. The two deceased have been identified as Amol Devarkar (23) and Suraj Hansati (28). Their friend Omkar Mohite (23), who was riding along with them got away with abrasions. The three men worked at the ticket booking office of Growel Cinemax in Kandivali and had left from there on their Bajaj Pulsar bike to eat in Borivali (west). Suraj was riding the bike.
“The dumper was moving at a high speed as it was night time. The three came on a bike from behind and while overtaking the dumper hit their bike. While Suraj’s head and Amol’s waist went under the dumper’s wheels, the bike and Omkar fell on the other side,” said senior police inspector Suhas Raikar of Kasturba Marg police station.
Mr Charania said, “The driver of the dumper stopped at a distance of 500 metres to see if the bikers were alive or dead. I chased him and blocked his way with my ambulance. He was later handed over to the police.”
The driver, Suryabhan More (52), has been booked for rash and negligent driving causing death and for endangering life under Sections 279, 304A and 337 of IPC.
