Two die of cardiac arrest at Mumbai airport

Two persons died within a span of a few hours at Mumbai airport. Sources from Mumbai airport said that both passengers were above 50 years and died of cardiac arrest.

Confirming this, the official spokesperson of Mumbai airport said, “The city airport almost every second day witnesses a medical emergency where the doctor from Mumbai International Airport Limited provides them medical assistance but this time, two passengers died at the domestic terminal due to cardiac arrest.” The police has registered a case of accidental death in both cases. Police sources informed The Asian Age that both the deceased were heart patients and were on medication.

In the first instance, Tarini Roy (57) was scheduled to depart Bagdogra by an Indigo flight at about 7.30 am. Mr Roy was travelling with two other family members. They were standing in the check-in area before boarding the flight when Roy suddenly collapsed. Immediately, airport doctors were informed who started Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and told the family to approach a hospital, seeing his condition. Roy was moved to Nanavati Hospital in the airport’s Advanced Life Support ambulance where doctors declared him dead due to cardiac arrest. Later, his body was sent to Cooper Hospital for an autopsy.

In the second instance, Munnilal Gupta (50), who was to fly by 5E178 flight of Indigo Airlines to Patna city of Bihar, via Delhi, died after getting medical assistance for at least half-an-hour. According to sources, at about 8.15 am, Mr Gupta, while standing near the gate 1C for queuing assistance, suddenly fell down. Airport doctors were called and they started CPR, which included 5 shocks using Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and end tracheal intubations. After trying for half-an-hour, at about 8.50am, the doctors declared Mr Gupta dead and informed police officials. Mr Gupta was travelling with his wife and his body too was sent to Cooper Hospital for a post mortem.
