Two arrested for assaulting traffic constable
The DN Nagar police in Andheri (west) arrested two persons, riding on a motorbike under the influence of alcohol, for allegedly roughing up a police constable from the traffic division of Mumbai Police after he intervened in an incident of road rage between the duo and another motorist.
According to the DN Nagar police, the incident occurred at around 5 pm when the complainant Sanjay Navale (30), a police constable with DN Nagar traffic division, was discharging his duty at the IOC junction near DN Nagar Metro station.
The accused, identified as Vicky Vijay Salve (21) and Ram Bansode (29) were on a motorbike and both were under the influence of alcohol, the police said. They were having an argument with another motorist when Mr Navale went up to them and tried to make peace. But another heated argument ensued and the duo assaulted him, the police said.
A police official investigating the case said, “They tore Mr Navale’s collar. He suffered minor injury on his neck, shoulder and nail marks on his face.” With the help of other passersby, Navale managed to overpower them and they were handed over to the police. In the melee the motorist with whom they were fighting fled from the spot. The DN Nagar police sent the constable as well as the duo to Cooper Hospital for a medical examination. Both accused are residents of Chembur.
An FIR has been registered under sections 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 353 (Assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 506(2) (Criminal intimidation) and 34 (Common intention) IPC read with 184 (Dangerous or reckless driving), 185 (Driving under influence of alcohol or drugs), 129 (Not wearing of protective headgear), 188 (Abetment of certain offences) Motor Vehicles Act is registered. They have been sent to police custody.
