In a relief for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Authority (MMRDA), the Somaiya Trust has agreed to handover its 500 square metre land to the MMRDA for the 1.6-kilometre-long Bandra-Kurla (BKC)-Eastern Express Highway elevated bridge.

The Somaiya Trust was expecting monetary compensation for handing over its land to the MMRDA. “After our proposal of giving them transfer of rights (TDR) for its 500 square metres plot, the Trust has agreed to the proposal of TDR over its earlier demand of compensation. The MMRDA has informed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) about the proposal,” said Anil Wankhede, deputy commissioner (Lands and Estate), MMRDA.

The acquisition of the land owned by the Somaiya Trust was vital for the MMRDA as it is the other end of the elevated bridge. The alignment of the bridge is such that it will pass through the ground in order to connect the bridge with Eastern Express Highway.

“We have already started the civil work of the bridge from the BKC end and after completing the due formalities with the Somaiya Trust, we will start work from the other end too,” said a MMRDA official.

The executive committee of the MMRDA approved the Rs 155.7 crore project in 2014. The project will provide connectivity between the western and eastern suburbs. The connector is expected to cut travel time by 30 minutes and distance by 3 km. It is also expected to decrease traffic congestion in Sion and Dharavi areas.
