In a relief for actor Ali Asgar, the Bombay high court on Friday granted him transit anticipatory bail for seven days, allowing him to approach an appropriate court in Haryana to get regular anticipatory bail in a case where he has been charged with hurting religious sentiments.
Justice Ajey Gadkari granted Asgar bail on a surety of Rs 25,000 for a week within which time the comedian will have to approach a court in Haryana where the FIR has been lodged against him and seven others.
Asgar, who plays Dadi in the series Comedy Nights with Kapil approached the high court, seeking pre-arrest bail after Haryana police on Wednesday arrested his co-star, Kiku Sharda, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments of followers of spiritual leader, Gurmeet Ram Rahim. Sect follower Uday Singh accused Sharda and others, including Asgar, of hurting religious sentiments by mimicking the godman.
Asgar, through his lawyer, Shyam Keshwani, argued before the court that he is a law-abiding citizen of the country, a resident of Mumbai and had never come to the adverse notice of any law enforcement agency. Asgar, along with Sharda, enacted a skit in the programme titled “Jashn-e-Ummed” in December last year, after which, a follower of Ram Rahim lodged an FIR in Kaithal, Haryana.
