Less than two weeks after the death of head constable Vilas Shinde, his family is in mourning yet again after they lost another family member — the deceased policeman’s mother, Kalavati Shinde (75) — who passed away on Monday morning on a day when the family was conducting rituals related to the policeman’s death.
The family, which is in Shirgaon Satara at present, was to return to the city on Thursday, but have now postponed their plans. Kalavati, who was already suffering from age-related issues, is said to have suffered a massive shock after Shinde was attacked and his subsequent death.
A friend of the family’s said: “She (Kalavati) had stopped eating after she had been told that her son was no more. She was already weak, but his death rattled her even more.”
Sources close to the family said that Kalavati suffered a heart attack and passed away around 11 am on Monday.
The family friend added: “His relatives were getting ready for the rituals that are to be conducted on the 13th day after Vilas’ death. But Kalavati suddenly collapsed and was rushed to the local hospital, where she was declared dead.”
The family had recently declined the state government’s offer for a job in the police force for Shinde’s son, Deepesh. Shinde, who was a head constable with the Mumbai traffic police, was hit on the head by a 21-year-old after he stopped the attacker’s brother for riding a bike despite being a minor.
Shinde was posted outside a petrol pump for a routine check, and was hit on the head with a wooden plank, after which he battled for his life for nine days but eventually, succumbed to his injuries on August 31.
Kalavati used to stay in Shirgaon in Satara and was cremated on Monday evening.
