Thousands of followers paid tributes to Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution, on his 59th death anniversary, including Maharashtra governor C Vidyasagar Rao and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis. The leaders went to Chaityabhoomi in Dadar’s Shivaji Park, the memorial of Dalit icon on the day that is observed as ‘Mahaparinirvan Diwas’ by Ambedkar’s followers.

“My salutations to Bharat Ratna Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, the architect of the most supreme Constitution of the world,” Mr Fadnavis said while paying his tributes.

The event started with state honours being accorded to Ambedkar at Chaityabhoomi. Mr Fadnavis also launched a website sjsa.maharashtra.gov.in dedicated to social justice and special assistance department.

Anandraj Ambekar, grandson of Ambedkar,said, “Every year lakhs of people come to pay homage at Chaityabhoomi. This is only because he used to take every community into confidence and

had an ideology of development of all the people from different communities. Today we have people even from the minority community visiting chaityabhoomi.”

Present at the event were state education minister Vinod Tawde with the mayor of Mumbai Snehal Ambekar. Later in the day, Mr Fadnavis with state finance minister Sudhir Mugwantiwar paid homage at Chandrapur. Union minister for Transport and Shipping Nitin Gadkari this morning paid floral tributes to the Dalit icon at the RBI square in Nagpur. In Nashik, rich tributes were paid by deputy mayor Gurmit Bagga, corporators and several other political leaders at midnight to mark Ambedkar’s death anniversary.

Meanwhile, the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) also printed one lakh copies of an informative booklet on Ambedkar which were distributed among people visitng chaityabhoomi to pay homage.
