Within two hours early on Sunday, thieves broke into and looted valuables in 15 houses in Bhandup. The incident comes in the wake of 15 houses that were broken into in Kanjurmarg last week.
The Kanjurmarg incident had, however, made the residents of the locality aware of the possibility of similar break-ins and they had taken certain precautions owing to which, this time, the thieves could steal very little from the houses in Bhandup, except laptops and some gold, claimed sources.
According to Bhandup police officials, the robberies took place between 2 am and 4 am on Sunday. The areas that were targeted include Konkan Nagar, Shastri Nagar, Gavdevi and Tembhi Pada. The residents, after realising what had occurred, called up the police around 6 am.
Concerned about the spate of break-ins, one of the victims, Akshay Kadam, deposited his gold and cash at his home town but, in spite of this, thieves stole some of his mother’s sarees.
The police has managed to get CCTV footage of four thieves who have been captured on camera in the Shastrinagar area. A police official said, “The footage is very clear and we can see four young thieves with a bag moving in the area and by the time they saw the CCTV cameras they ran away from the place.”
He further added, “In the Kanjurmarg housebreaking case too, the police found CCTV footage and has recognised one youngster on it, so we come to the conclusion that the same group broke into the houses in Bhandup too.”
Commenting on the matter, Shashank Sandbhor, assistant commissioner of police (Bhandup division), said, “We have formed three special teams in Bhandup as well as in Kanjurmarg police station for this case and are collecting every detail from the possible sources.
In the Bhandup case, we have discovered that the style in which the houses were broken into are exactly the same as that of the Kanjurmarg ones, so it is quite possible that the same gang is involved in breaking into the houses in Bhandup.”
